UEFA Playoff Matchups Set for the 2026 North & Central America World Cup!16 Teams Battle for Only 4 Spots — Italy Begins Their Quest to Return After 3 Tournaments vs Northern Ireland
FIFA announced on the 20th that the playoff draw for the European qualifiers of next year’s North and Central America World Cup has been completed.
The playoffs will take place in late March, featuring 16 teams: the 12 runners-up from the European qualifying groups and the top four teams from the UEFA Nations League 2024–25 standings. These 16 nations will be divided into four groups of four, with only the group winners earning a place in the World Cup.
The playoff participants were divided into four seeding pots:
Pot 1: Italy, Denmark, Türkiye, Ukraine
Pot 2: Poland, Wales, Czech Republic, Slovakia
Pot 3: Ireland, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo
Pot 4: Romania, Sweden, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland
In the opening round, Pot 1 teams face Pot 4,
while Pot 2 teams are matched against Pot 3.
Italy’s matchup has drawn particular attention.
The four-time world champions have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups,
making this playoff campaign especially significant.
They will open their path against Northern Ireland,
with a potential final against either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Bigger Picture
Looking at fan reactions across the four playoff groups, what becomes clear is not a simple split between confidence and pessimism, but a shared instinct to brace for chaos. Supporters are approaching this draw with memory rather than imagination — memory of past collapses, unexpected heroes, and the strange logic that governs one-off playoff matches.
Among supporters of nations with long World Cup histories, there is an awareness that pedigree offers no guarantees at this stage. For others, especially those used to disappointment, humor becomes a form of emotional insurance. From the fans’ perspective, this playoff is less about who appears strongest on paper and more about who survives the moment when pressure distorts everything.
Fan Reactions
Ireland
- “Ireland probably collectively groaned when they were drawn into the same bracket as Denmark.”
- “But yeah, Ireland gotta get past the Czechs first.”
- “Well, we (Czech) literally lost to the Faroe Islands, so yeah…”
- “Ireland’s got Parrott, their No.9 from AZ, mate.”
- “We’re Ireland, man… we even lost to Armenia once.”
Italy
- “Italy couldn’t have asked for a sweeter draw. March is gonna be pure comedy.”
- “Italy losing 0–1 to Northern Ireland is gonna be comedy gold.”
- “Dan Ballard 94th-minute header, calling it now.”
- “Off a Trai Hume cross. Pure cinema.”
Sweden
- “Sweden’s inconsistency honestly needs to be studied. Dovbyk masterclass incoming, trust.”
- “Man… I really hope so.”
- “Johansson masterclass incoming.”
Poland
- “Why do Poland have to play Albania every single time?”
- “Because we’re football friends, that’s why.”
Türkiye / Group C
- “Turkey has to be the winner of this draw.”
- “Nah, you can’t underestimate Lucescu.”
- “He literally got outcoached by Barbarez, who’s been a manager for less than two years. You’ll be fine.”
- “Romania looked poor from what I saw. We beat Georgia twice and they seemed the better team. Kosovo in the final could be tricky though.”
- “Nah, ‘Uncle’ still has something left in him.”
Romania
- “We’re terrible, to be honest. Stanciu and Drăgușin will be back, but it still feels like we’ve only got a slim chance.”
- “We’re getting smashed 5–0. Romania hasn’t made a World Cup in 27 years. We’re just not good.”
- “Lucescu knows Turkish football well, but with this squad and morale, it would take a miracle.”
- “We always struggle in finals anyway. One-off matches are scary. At least we’re playing Romania at home.”
Denmark
- “Denmark are such a weird team. On paper they’re legit, but they struggled against Belarus and Scotland.”
- “After you dominated us in Piraeus, I thought first place was basically done. What’s the issue — mental?”
- “Yeah, it feels mental. Once momentum turns, everything collapses.”
- “The younger players are quiet, and the veterans lead mostly when things are going well.”
- “So it’s a one-off match and home advantage is decided by a coin flip? Seriously?”
- “Teams with better group-stage records should be rewarded.”
- “Single-elimination matches on non-neutral grounds feel harsh.”
- “Seeding should be based on performance in this competition, not old rankings.”
What Remains
Taken together, these voices reveal a shared understanding across Europe: this playoff is a test of nerve more than reputation. Confidence exists, but it is fragile. Pessimism is common, yet rarely silent or bitter — it is often wrapped in humor, irony, or resignation.
From the fans’ perspective, the draw has not clarified the road to the World Cup. Instead, it has reminded everyone how quickly football narratives can flip in a single night. Long before March arrives, the emotional groundwork has already been laid — and that, in itself, may decide more than tactics ever will.
