Foden bags a brace as Man City edge Leeds 3–2 in a wild, last-minute thriller

Manchester City

Phil Foden strikes in the first minute and nets a stoppage-time winner as Man City survive Leeds’ late comeback in a dramatic 3–2 clash

The match was played on November 29, local time.

Manchester City and Leeds met on Matchday 13 of the Premier League on the 29th.
City entered the game on the back of two straight defeats — losing 1–2 to Newcastle and 0–2 to Leverkusen in the Champions League — and badly needed a bounce-back performance. Leeds, meanwhile, had dropped to 18th after three consecutive league losses, with Ao Tanaka returning to the starting XI for the first time since Matchday 10.

City struck instantly. Just one minute in, Josko Gvardiol released Matheus Nunes on the right, who combined with Bernardo Silva before sending in a low cross that Phil Foden poked home for the opener. City continued to dominate and doubled their lead on 25 minutes when Gvardiol forced in a loose ball after a corner.

Leeds struggled to break City down despite looking for counters, and the first half ended 2–0 to the hosts. Manager Daniel Farke made a double change at the break, bringing on Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jaka Bijol — and it paid off immediately. In the 49th minute, Leeds won the ball high, Ao Tanaka threaded a piercing through ball, and Calvert-Lewin finished to pull one back.

The comeback continued in the 68th minute. Calvert-Lewin was fouled in the box by Gvardiol, and although Donnarumma saved Lucas Nmecha’s penalty, the striker buried the rebound to make it 2–2.

Leeds took control after equalizing, while City struggled to create meaningful chances — until stoppage time. In the 90+1st minute, Rayan Cherki fed Foden on the right side of the box, and the England international fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner to seal a dramatic brace and a 3–2 victory.

City face Fulham away on December 2, while Leeds host Chelsea the following day.

“Social Media Reactions”

XI | Donnarumma, Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly, Nico, Bernardo (C), Reijnders, Foden, Doku, Haaland

SUBS | Trafford, Stones, Ake, Marmoush, Cherki, Ait-Nouri, Savinho, Khusanov, Lewi

“City fan here — Nicolás González nearly got killed out there lol. Rodri being out long-term is rough, but losing Kovačić hurts even more. Just rest Nico and let Reijnders and Bernardo cover his role, then throw Malmøš or Cherki up top.”

“If Bernardo’s playing inside, just use Kusanov as an inverted fullback, go pseudo-3CB, and let Núñez run the right wing. Put Malmøš or Cherki under Haaland and let them roam. I just wanna see more of Malmøš, man.”

“FODEN LET’S GOOOOO — scoring that early is hilarious.”

“Nice sequence to Nunes. It really is always Nunes. But man… our midfield looks chaotic whenever we try to attack.”

“Reijnders looks like he’ll be good once he actually clicks with everyone.”

“Facts. He’s been here less than half a year — he’ll fit eventually.”
“Honestly he looked more settled at the start. No idea how he suddenly got so meh.”

“So close there… good move again. Doku’s diagonal passing is getting legit. His link-up with O’Reilly is improving too.”

“SET-PIECE GOAL LET’S GOOOO — Gvardiol rocket, feels like forever since the last one.”

“Didn’t Rúben score from a set piece vs Newcastle?”
“I guess that counts too. Anyway, nice to see Joško score again.”

“Bernardo absolutely didn’t interfere with the keeper. If that’s ‘involved,’ then everyone standing offside would nullify every goal ever. Easy goal for me.”

“When is Reijnders gonna score? Long-term project, sure, but he’s gonna catch heat if he keeps missing sitters.”

“Conceding like that is embarrassing. Classic Nunes chaos. Man literally gifted them a goal.”

“How is that a yellow? And how is the other one NOT a foul? Zero consistency from this ref.”

“Is Donnarumma okay? If he’s time-wasting that’s fine, but if he’s actually hurt our season’s cooked.”

“He’s 100% doing it on purpose so Pep can bark instructions.”
“Team-approved time-wasting masterclass.”

“He could’ve gotten to that ball. Panic tackle → PK. It happens. Would’ve preferred Malmøš take it over Haaland though.”

“Back line is a mess today. Rebound he gave up was awful. And why do we fall apart EVERY second half this season?”

“Get Reijnders off and bring Cherki on. C’mon Cherki, show us something. Reijnders was fine overall — finishing is just bad luck.”

“Here we go again… we never seize momentum in these games. Malmøš should’ve come earlier.”

“FODEN AGAIN!!! What a goddamn baller. That’s our academy star.”

“Great leap from Gvardiol. And man, Haaland must be miserable — two defenders glued to him all match. More long balls and he scores easily.”

“We survived, but those decisions from the ref were wild. Second half felt like we lost every 50/50. Stressful as hell, but good win.”

“Barely got away with it. At home. Against Leeds. Not great. But thank god for Foden.”

“Five-at-the-back always screws our balance. Pep’s system has limits. Nunes and Gvardiol had mistakes today but hopefully they learn.”

“Foden plays better with Cherki than Reijnders imo — and yep, that assist WAS Cherki’s.”

“Why do we crumble every time the opponent raises the pressing intensity? Drop the tempo sometimes, Pep. Not every sequence needs to be chaos-ball.”

“Exactly. We press → fail → panic → press again → fail → backline wide open → boom.”

“We’ve got all these players but zero tactical variation — no 2-striker looks, no long-ball switches. Easy to prep against us.”

“Not a result to celebrate, but Foden was otherworldly today.”
